Criminal Justice Study May 2020
After 3 years of work, the criminal justice study group is finishing up study materials for a criminal justice position update. The current criminal justice position was last updated in 1995 - 25 years ago! A lot of research in criminal justice has happened in those years and without updating our current position the LWVIL is prevented from taking action on many laws being proposed.
The materials will be available within the next few months for local leagues to study. The next steps are to ask each local league to form its own team and read and discuss the materials. The local league team will then present the information to the members of the local league, who will vote on the consensus questions. The consensus decided from each local league will then be sent to LWVIL and will contribute to the updated criminal justice position.
Criminal Justice reform is a very important topic across the country. The United States incarcerates more people than any other country, destroying families and communities, and spending billions of dollars without really improving public safety. There are 17 topic areas to be discussed and I am interested in gathering names of people now who would like to participate. If you have an interest in participating in the Palatine Area league’s study group, please send me an email or call me. I think you will find it a very rewarding experience.
