Our next DDD will focus on food insecurity in our communities and a special project that LWVPA was selected to pilot with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). We proudly accepted the task of bringing voter information to our neighbors being served by the food pantry program, Faith Feeds, organized by Partners in Our Community (POC) in Palatine. We are delighted to partner with POC, as they have been a trusted resource for many of our past events. Depending on how the pilot progresses, our presence at other food pantries in the area may develop.
First, there will be a presentation to jumpstart us with this project. Molly Dubow, Senior Manager of Advocacy at GCFD, will paint a picture about the level of hunger that exists in ours and other communities. She will highlight the work the GCFD has done advocating for common sense legislation to address the changes in critical services. Statistics will be provided about the number of households visiting the food pantries and data about the impact due to the changes in SNAP eligibility. She will also address the importance of this particular group of citizens voting in elections with an emphasis on how our members can get involved.
Next will be Action Steps. As mentioned Molly will share Action Steps that you can take immediately at the event. We will also need members at the food pantry greeting the clients and working the line outside while they wait to check in, providing information to potential voters about why, how, when, and where to vote. A simple training will be provided for members who would be interested in joining us at Faith Feeds.
Therefore, no matter the amount of time allowed in your schedule, there is a role for you at this meeting. You may be there to learn about the issue and take immediate action, or you may want to volunteer for our special pilot project at Faith Feeds. It will be an enriching experience!
