Purpose


The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

History


After suffragettes won the women’s right to vote in 1920, they founded the League of Women Voters to educate the newly enfranchised women. We have been working ever since to help fellow citizens, in a nonpartisan way, become informed active voters, and advocating for common sense, good government practices that support our democracy.

Policy


  • Nonpartisan but political

The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.

  • Grassroots

League members themselves choose which public policy issues will be targeted for study and action.

  • Multi-Issue

The League takes action on a broad range of issues -- from violence prevention to pollution control, campaign finance reform and local school referenda.

  • Informative

The League registers voters, sponsors candidate forums, publishes voters guides and bridges the partisan divide by supporting civil discourse on topics of community interest.


Location


Our league serves communities in the northwest suburbs of Chicago: Barrington area, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Schaumburg.
