Positions on Issues

 

The LWVPA supports positions that the State and U.S. Leagues have studied and adopted.  State and U.S. positions on issues can be found at the links below:

In addition to State and U.S. Positions, the LWVPA has adopted the locally-focused positions below: (Note: Our positions now incorporate positions of the former Barrington League that were adopted by a vote of our LWVPA members at our annual meeting in June of 2022.)

 

LWV PALATINE, BARRINGTON AND SCHAUMBURG AREAS  -  WHERE WE STAND

 

COMMUNITY PLANNING /HOUSING /LAND USE position in brief:

Local governments should conduct a periodic planning process and develop a master / comprehensive plan that includes no less than the following:

  • Zoning and land use ordinances should support diversity of housing to achieve a heterogeneous residential population
  • Plans should Include low- and moderate-income housing options along with shared housing, and supportive housing options such as group homes
  • Plan should be compatible with a desire for open space and concerns for conservation of natural resources

 


LOCAL GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE AND ADMINISTRATION position in brief:

  • Structure of local government should maximize citizen representation and involvement through accountability of its Trustees, determination of voting district boundaries, and transparency of decision-making
  • Local governments should engage in regional cooperation through a council of governments to ensure adequate housing supply, social services, and other resources

 


NATURAL RESOURCES (including Water, Sewer and Waste Management) positions in brief:

The LWVPA supports the planning, development and implementation of the following policies:

  • Conservation of water resources
  • Reduction of the waste stream through recycling efforts and responsible purchasing practices
  • Participation in regional planning for disposal of waste
  • Where applicable, establishing minimum standards for septic systems

 


SOCIAL SERVICES position in brief:

State and local governments should allocate sufficient funding to social services to meet the needs of its citizens.

 


SENIOR CITIZENS position in brief:

Services for senior citizens should be provided locally, including locating senior centers and other organizations for the aged in our local communities under local government authority.  In addition to services, housing, especially for low-income seniors should be included in our communities.

 


CHILD CARE position in brief:

Our communities benefit from support of a variety of services that provide responsible daycare for children whose parents must be absent from home due to employment or further schooling.

 


LIBRARY SERVICES position in brief:

We believe that our library districts should meet the needs of our communities with respect to access to a diverse set of resources from which to gain information, ideas and knowledge through collections that are organized in various forms and media.  Collections should include resources for research, information, recreation and education.

 


CITIZEN INVOLVEMENT position in brief:

LWVPA supports the active involvement of citizens in their communities, especially in times of disasters or emergencies.
